← Back to news & insight

AFL Architects are pleased to confirm our appointment as part of the specialist consultant team supporting the early stages of Southend United Football Club’s redevelopment of Roots Hall.

This marks the beginning of an exciting and important journey for the Club, its supporters, and the local community. AFL has been engaged to contribute our expertise in stadium design and masterplanning, working alongside a carefully selected group of partners with experience across the sports and property sectors.

The newly appointed team also includes:

  • Stadimax – Experts in stadium hospitality and business consultancy, ensuring the commercial viability of future matchday and event experiences.
  • Savills – Leading international property consultants, lending their insight into site planning, valuations and development strategy.
  • Stace – Cost consultants who will support budgeting, phasing and financial oversight throughout the design process.
  • Wrenbridge Sport – Development managers and stadia specialists tasked with coordinating the multiple stakeholder and logistical elements involved in delivering a large-scale stadium scheme.

Our focus during this initial phase will be on helping explore opportunities for the site’s evolution, with sustainability, community value, and long-term operational success all central to the conversation.

"We’re excited to be working with Southend United and the wider consultant team to help unlock the potential of this much-loved ground,” said John Roberts, Director at AFL Architects. “Roots Hall has a strong identity and legacy, and we’re proud to support a project that seeks to honour that history while creating new possibilities for the future."

Engagement with fans and local businesses will be a key priority in the coming months, with Stadimax leading a feasibility study to better understand the needs and aspirations of the wider community. Insights gathered during this phase will help inform the next steps in the project’s development.

AFL are honoured to be involved in what promises to be a significant and community-driven transformation for Southend United Football Club.
